Long Island congregation supports hate crime victim's family, community
In what Long Island, N.Y., police are calling a hate crime, 37-year-old Marcelo Lucero was stabbed to death by a group of seven youth on Nov. 8, 2008. Police say Lucero was targeted by the youth who "wanted to beat up someone who looked Hispanic."

Fisk University Jubilee Singers awarded 2008 National Medal of Arts
President George W. Bush today announced the recipients of the 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest award for artists and arts patrons. The Jubilee Singers from the UCC-related Fisk University and 8 other recipients will receive medals presented by the President and Mrs. Laura Bush in a ceremony at the White House.

Religious bodies issue legal challenge to California's Proposition 8
Three settings of the United Church of Christ have filed a legal petition before the Supreme Court of California to challenge the validity of the voter-approved Proposition 8 which ended same-gender marriage in the state.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) held a "National "Day of Witness" for a Presidential executive order to Ban Torture."

Meeting in Cleveland Nov. 5-7, the Wider Church Ministries (WCM) board voted to approve the single board recommendations from the Governance Formation Team II (GFT-II).
